Description:
- These gardens have had a long and somewhat rocky history. They were originally opened in 1888 in a temporary location, and were moved to their permanent location in 1893. After being open to the public for over 50 years, they closed in 1950. By the time they were finally restored some 30 years later, they were an overrun mess of flowers and vines. The restored gardens were a major tourist attraction throughout the '80s and the '90s, but a hurricane in the late '90s nearly destroyed them. Once again they were restored, and remain a bit tattered and torn but still lovely. Native plants and animals make their homes in the garden. It spans several acres near the Parliament Building.
