There are plenty of things to see and do in Asheville, North Carolina but make sure visiting the Biltmore Estate in South Asheville is at the top of your list. Basic admission to this large privately-owned house gives you access to all of the grounds, stables, hiking trails, winery, and the grand tour of the house. During the summer you should buy tickets for the Biltmore Summer Evening Concerts. You can see legendary bands perform on the South Terrace of the estate amid an exceptional view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Once you have made plans to visit the Biltmore Estate leave time to peruse the shops at the Biltmore Village. Located just outside the gates to the estate, these independently-owned specialty stores give tourists ample opportunity to spend their hard-earned dough. Of particular note in the village is the New Morning Gallery. This gallery houses the best collection of regional Arts and Crafts in Western North Carolina.
Downtown is also home to the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, Riverside Cemetery, and Pack Square. The memorial is the Old Kentucky Home Boarding house where the famous novelist Thomas Wolfe lived for 10 years of his childhood. His autobiographical novel Look Homeward, Angel immortalizes his childhood home and makes it one of American literature’s most famous landmarks. If old Victorian homes are something you are interested in visiting you should check out the Smith-McDowell House Museum. Built around 1840, the museum is the oldest brick house in Asheville. You will be able to explore the history, artifacts, and architecture from the Victorian era of American history. In addition, take a look at the Riverside Cemetery and arrange for a walking tour of the historical grounds. Two famous Southern authors Thomas Wolfe and O. Henry are buried here, but you’ll also be able to explore the 87 acres of rolling hills and flower gardens overlooking the French Broad River. The last spot on your tour of Downtown should include Pack Place. Here you’ll be able to stop by one of the cafes and people-watch, visit the Asheville Art Museum and the Colburn Earth Science Museum, or sit down for a gourmet meal at one of the restaurants.
