  • NileGuide Expert Says:

The Greek National Opera, or GNO, employs visionary set-designers. While some of the more modern concepts might not be for everyone, they will certainly remain with you for years after the curtain drops.

  • NileGuide Expert tip:

During the winter months productions are staged in the Olympia theatre, Acropol theatre, and Lyric Stage, whereas the summer month productions are incorporated with the Athens Festival and changing venues, including the Herod Atticus.

    Description:

    • The Greek National Opera, established in 1939, is the country's most important institution as regards opera productions. Housed in the Olympia Theatre on Akadimias Street, the National Opera presents works from both the classical and contemporary repertory, including works by Greek composers. Among the many great singers who have performed on this stage is Maria Callas. The diva's first professional contract was with the Greek National Opera back in 1940, which inaugurated her successful international career. In addition to opera, the programme also covers operetta and ballet performances.
