- Thanks to the 2004 Olympic Games, there are several vacant stadiums linked by large pedestrian thoroughfares making for lovely places to hang for the residents. One of these is the Nea Faliro area, specifically the area around the Tae Kwon Do stadium (the dark, futuristic building that looks a little like Darth Vader) and in view of the basketball stadium and the new Karaiskaki Olympiakos football stadium. There is a bridge with concrete benches and rows of sapling Pine trees overlooking Posidonas Avenue and the marina for a rare bit of peace in such a city known for elements of anarchistic chaos. Follow the walkway opposite the marina, there is a dirt path wrapping around the Tae Kwon Do stadium opposite a football field. Keep following it and you will arrive at the "Village" complex, a nice area with a modern mega plex cinema showing current releases (predominantly Hollywood with Greek subtitles) There is a "gold class" option that is a little extra but grants you access to a special lounge and allows you to have food and alcohol served to you throughout the film. A few cafeterias including a Costa Coffee, Flocafe and a posh place called "Seven Sins" with, you got it, the seven sins as its theme are all in line, and the "Pita Pallais" is an excellent souvlaki place for a cheap, filling meal. It is surrounded by a pleasant marina that extends to Flisvos, another area that is good for taking a "volta" and has an outdoor cinema and several cafes. You won't be alone. As the sun gets lower, the area is full of active Athenians playing with their model boats and cars, riding bicycles, walking with their children, jogging, fishing, swimming, even parasailing. A lovely place to get away from the tourist scene and see where the real people of Athens are living and playing.
