Our top places for listening to classical music or opera in Athens range from the globally unique to the cozy and intimate. Art and culture are of critical importance to the nightlife of Athenians and hugely popular with locals, the indoor theaters in the winters and the outdoor stadiums in the summer. Whatever time of year you're visiting Athens, we highly recommend adding an event in one of Athens' concert halls and performance spaces to your plans.
The highlight of an Athens summer is the Athens festival and Epidaurus Festival farther south in the Peloponnese, mostly due to having an opportunity to see an opera or symphony orchestra perform in one of Greece's most well preserved ancient stadiums. While performances of various sorts are taking place in multiple venues, the best are usually reserved for these two monuments to art. For 19th century splendor, seeing an opera in the original building of the Greek National Opera is a classic affair; in the summer outdoor performances are held in the gorgeous Zappeion building skirting the edge of the National Gardens.
The Athens Concert Hall, also known as Megaron Mouziki, who's renovation in 2004 was commemorated by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Pallas Theater is good for electric performances of international superstars on a smaller stage, but sometimes nothing beats the intimacy of one piano in a beautiful room; for that we recommend the Grande Bretagne's Winter Garden restaurant lounge.
The Onassis Cultural Centre is the newest addition to the classical music performance space in Athens and since its opening in December 2010 has already hosted internationally renowned quartets and choral groups, but we're on our toes in anticipation of the new Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center and Opera Hall being built farther south in Faliro Marina near the Olympic Martial Arts stadium. With Athens, it's difficult to know when things will be finished, but on the other hand good things come to those who wait.
