Souvlaki, tiropita, gyros, fresh sandwiches, lemony soups, green salads... there is no shortage of cheap eats in Athens but we've narrowed it down to ten for our top ten budget meals in Athens. In the souvlaki category we have two of the most famous souvlaki/gyro dispensaries in the whole city: Bairaktaris and Thanasis. They're actually even located in the same street. Sitting down for a meal will put you in the usual 12-15 euros a person price range, but should you take a souvlaki with pita or gyro sandwich to go, you're fed for around two euros. Ariston's bakery has melt in your mouth savory pies in filo dough that go for a little under.
Should you prefer to sit, Kymatothravstis and Barbara's Food Company in Exarcheia both offer big portions on small tables for reasonable prices. Mystic Pizza has three shops in the city serving wholesome pizza. Tramezzini's namesake rolled sandwiches rarely come over three euros have gourmet ingredients like capers, mushroom, arugula and pesto, but we also love their toasted bagel sandwiches and bagels are a rarity in this town.
Lastly, no list of cheap restaurants in Athens would be complete without Greece's own heavyweight in hamburgers, Goody's, where you can also get salads, pasta, and sandwiches for right around five euros.
Olymbos Naoussa, on 30-32, Perikleous str, right in the centre of Athens, is a favorite with shop owners and people who work close by, who frequent it mainly for lunch. A historic restaurant which opened in Thessaloniki in 1927 and more recently in Athens, it is famous for homemade traditional cuisine.Try the schnitzel with chips or rice on the side, the spinach with rice, and for dessert yoghurt with quince jam
