  • The best restaurants in Athens are also the best ways to experience Greek culture. Sitting around a table for a late lunch and a dozen or so communal plates of mezze is essential for understanding the importance of family, friends, and food in the Mediterranean, where the good weather often keeps people in large outdoor atmospheres with generous servings designed for eating over long periods of time.

While any neighborhood in Athens offers dozens of choices of traditional eateries, our top ten list of the best restaurants in Athens shows off some of the modern restaurants headed by young, talented chefs that have been getting some good love in foodie press. Probably the biggest name of restaurateurs is Spondi, recently listed as one of the finest restaurants in the world, the only in Athens with two Michelin stars. Hytra, Luna Rossa, Varoulko, and Vardis are also Michelin-starred restaurants, though we left off Vardis due to its location in the northerly Pentelikon hotel to make room for some exceptional, more moderately priced places like 2Mazi in Syntagma and Yandes in Exarcheia. Plous Podilatou and Ta Vrahia Tis Peraikis are our favorite destinations for enjoying the best item on any Greek menu- a huge variety of fresh seafood straight from the Aegean Sea.
