Vegetarians delight! The Mediterranean is ripe with restaurants dishing out heaps of vegetables, grains, cheeses and other face-free delights: delicious in their simplicity, just the way nature intended. Our top ten list is a mixed salad of budget and splurge options to keep veggie lovers happy.
Our two favorite havens for vegetarians are Syntagma's Pure Bliss Alternative Multi-Place and the Movement for Organic Health. Both offer ample meal choices for those who have chosen a vegetarian lifestyle as well as host seminars and events to promote the diet's benefits. Bliss is in the number one slot for also offering a mellow, colorful atmosphere and eclectic soundtrack, but we appreciate MOH's commitment to affordable prices and a well stocked biological supermarket next door.
Three vegetarian hot spots for fast food include the Asian food franchises, Noodle Bar and Yum-Yum, as well as the wholesome pies tossed by the Mystic Pizza.
Traditional Greek meals involving vegetables include fava beans, wild greens in lemon juice, pan fried cheeses and tomato and caper bruschetta, for starters. These can be found in most local tavernas but here are four of our favorites: the humble taverna Paradosiako or gourmet takeout from Melilotos, both in Syntagma. In Exarcheia we recommend Barbara's Food Company for a casual meal and Yandes for something more special.
Perhaps the most special haven for vegetarians is the beautiful Jaipur Palace with two locations in Glyfada and Kifissia. Eat curried lentils and chickpeas out of burnished copper pots in a garden of elephants and Indian antiques.
We don't need to tell practicing vegetarians that they should always ask to know if things have been cooked in animal fat or broth. Say " Eimai hortofagos" or "Den trow creas, kotopoulo, i psarri" which means "I'm a vegetarian" and "I don't eat meat, chicken or fish."
