The Best of NileGuide
Athens Hostels have been working to overcome a fairly poor reputation in the recent years and we're happy to report that many have succeeded. While hostel stayers are used to roughing it, it's nice to be surprised by a good location, low price, a helpful staff, and a long list of amenities to make your stay easier. Our top ten hostels start with those that have ticked off all of these criteria and end with those who get pretty close.

We love the Athens Backpackers Hostel for being well designed and well placed in the city with easy access to supermarkets, a self service laundry facility, and even Funky Ride Bicycle Rentals. Their roof bar makes the ideal place to kick back and strike up a conversation with other travelers. The Students & Travellers Inn gets the prize for being in the prettiest part of town. Eating a cheap breakfast of yogurt and honey in their garden really sets the mood for being in Athens. If you're an off the beaten path traveler that wants to stay away from tourist traps, base yourself in Exarcheia in one of three warm hostels: the Dryades and Orion Hotels just under Strefi Hill and the Hostel Aphrodite is very close to the Archaeological Museum and metro stations. The latter offers their guest welcome drinks in their onsite bar. The Athens International Youth Hostel is a reasonable choice but removed from the rest of the city's attractions.

The Athens Easy Hostel and Acropolis House are more in the cheap hotel category, but offer a similar communal, family feel. Of the two, the Acropolis House is better located in a picturesque street behind Syntagma Square; it does well for more mature travelers who don't want to pay much but also don't want to hear parties throughout the night. The nearby Adonis makes a good alternative should the Acropolis House be full.
