  • Lykavittos Hill is the highest point of the city and a beautiful protected green space popular with walkers. Choosing a hotel in Athens near Lykavittos Hill means that you'll be primarily in the areas surrounding Kolonaki, Syntagma and Exarcheia. These areas appeal to people who want to be slightly outside of the main tourist circuit and mingle more with the locals. Kolonaki and Syntagma are perfect for those who like the high life while Exarcheia is suited for the more earthy. All of the hotels on our top ten list of places near Lykavittos (also called Lycabettus) are all within two miles of the hill itself

The St. George Lycabettus is certainly the nearest to Lykavittos; its location just at the foot of the hill makes it the city's highest hotel and Kolonaki's only five star. While it's got some wonderful amenities (we feel it could be the most beautiful rooftop veranda in the city) reports are that it doesn't quite reach five star standards in service and the distance from the rest of Athens becomes a pain. Stick to the Syntagma chain of five stars: the Grande Bretagne, Classical King George, and NJV Athens Plaza and access the hill via high dollar Voukourestiou Street. The Hilton and the Divani Caravel also keep a steady reputation for being comfortable and professional; the nearby Evangeliasmos metro station makes it easy to maneuver around the rest of Athens.

In boutique hotels we like the clean minimalism of the Periscope, better integrated into the Kolonaki neighborhood than the St. George. The Athens Diamond Hotel in Syntagma is a great choice for all around value with added funk while the Athens Lycabettus is more conservative. The latter, while being located, is closer to a three star hotel than a four.

For travelers on a budget, the Dryades Hotel is a homey hostel in Exarcheia with close access to both Lykavittos and Strefi Hill. Should it be full, ask about the sister hotel, Orion, just a little further down the street.
