Top 10:

Music in Athens

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • There is nothing that stirs the Greek soul quite like a good piece of music. They'll take it in any form they can get it whether classical, traditional, jazz or rock- so long as it can be accompanied with a fine spirit and some swaying.

Here are our top ten suggestions for places for a quality musical performance:
The Odeon of Herod Atticus again tops our list, and rightfully so. We just can't think of a better place to hear a symphony orchestra or even a George Dalaras concert except perhaps Epidaurus, not on our list due to the 2.5 hour drive necessary to get there. The Athens Concert Hall and Onassis Cultural Centre are both excellent venues who choose only the best to shadow their doorways, much less play on their stages. Should you be in Athens through the winter, don't miss an opera at the Greek National Opera Center. On the other hand if opera makes your toenails curl you might opt for the Half Note Jazz Club, Gagarin 205 or the stadium at Lycabettus, or Lykavittos Theater for a good rock show.

The Pallas Theater on Voukourestiou Street, Badminton Theater in Ambelokipi, and Gazi Technopolis are all top picks for catching something eclectic- edging toward avante garde. Technopolis and the Badminton Theater work through the summer while the Pallas works through the winter- as do most indoor music venues.

One thing not on our list is the Olympic Complex. Certainly when there are huge stars like Beyonce Knowles or U2, they perform there, but most of the year it's used as the home field of Panathenaikos Football club.
