  • The Best of NileGuide
  • The best hotel location choice for any first timers to Athens, Plaka offers everything one dreams about when envisioning an Athens vacation: cobblestone paths that wind up like an MC Escher creation, terraces dripping with potted Bougainvillea, and the steadfast presence of the Acropolis looming overhead. Many of the roads in Plaka are pedestrian making it quiet and romantic but still close to a large number of restaurants, shops, and cafes. Syntagma Square is only a ten minute walk.

Our top ten Plaka hotels are situated between the Acropolis and Syntagma. The higher ranking hotels are the best overall with regard to comfort, convenience, and hospitality. The Electra Palace, our number one choice and the area's most central five star hotel, is a romantic old hotel that goes out of its way to make its guests happy. The Divani Palace Acropolis is equal in excellence but is deeper into Plaka, more removed from the area's most popular sights and sounds. It makes up for it in uniqueness: being built above ancient ruins, it's one of the only hotels that doubles as a museum. The recently remodeled Ava hotel is the perfect choice for families or anyone wanting some room to spread out.

Our list's only boutique option is the Magna Grecia, a small mansion just opposite the National Cathedral and one of the more charming hotels in all of Athens. Its small size makes advance planning imperative: reservations should be made at least eight months in advance. The Central Hotel and Hermes Hotel, both located on a small, neighborhood street that ends at the main street of Plaka, Adrianou, are standard, modern European hotels that appeal to travelers with simple needs. The Central has a rooftop jacuzzi tub with a view of the Acropolis. Even more basic are the Acropolis House and Adonis hotels; only slightly above hostel prices, both have a grown up feel and old world charm. While the Student Travelers Inn is the only true hostel inside Plaka's perimeters, we feel the Art Gallery Hotel and Athens Backpackers are superior. They both exceed the expectations of the backpacker traveler with minimal needs by providing that certain something which makes a stay memorable.
