Top 10:

Romantic Athens Hotels

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • We've called on Aphrodite and Cupid to get this list of romantic hotels in Athens just right. These hotels set the mood for romance, or even just for romantics. We looked for rooftop gardens, hot tubs with views of the Acropolis at night, candles and a warm, Mediterranean atmosphere, charming old hotels with wrought iron railing and high ceilings, or simply rooms with a view (and deliciously soft mattresses.) You'll be hard pressed to pry yourself out and see the sights, though we recommend you try.

Top spot goes to Classical King George Palace for a rooftop garden to die for. The Royal Palace Suite takes up the entire 9th floor and has a private pool and jacuzzi with a view of the Parthenon. As it's part of the Classical hotel chain, owned by Grecotel, they will also handle all of the details of a beach wedding in the coastal suburbs of Athens.

The Magna Grecia might not offer as many amenities, but of the hotels on our list it offers an intimate charm that the others lose by their large scale. In the romance department, the Acropolis View Suite is swathed in pink and, as one would assume, has a lovely view of the Acropolis. All rooms are equipped with dreamy cocomat mattresses.

The Acropolis House is our budget option for the romantic. Book well in advance to get room 401 or 402. Both are large, feature wall frescoes and other unique architectural details, and have a pleasant balcony with a view.

Four of our romantic hotels are located along the coast between Vouliagmeni and Sounio: the Margi, Cape Sounion, Astir Palace, and the Grand Resort Lagonissi. They're all divine places to escape but note that it will require an investment if you want easy access to the city, particularly from Cape Sounion, a sixty-minute commute from the city center. The Temple of Poseidon and the port of Lavrio offer attractions more close at hand.

The Pentelikon, the only hotel on the list in the northern suburbs, is a more mature approach to romance, as is the area of Kifissia offering high end dining and shopping. A romantic retreat would be a day trip to Penteli Mountain, or well outside of Attica to the archaeological site of Delphi, a two hour drive in the mountains.
