  • You're only going to be in Athens for a few hours and are wondering what would beat sitting in a cafe staring at the planes? Quite a lot actually. Taking the metro adjascent to the airport all the way into the city is a good option but for our top ten things to do around the Athens airport, you'll need private transportation to cross expansive terrain of highway, vineyards and olive tree groves. Check out our top ranked transfers for some recommended companies. All of the activities on our list are within a 25 minute drive of the airport.

For history and nature lovers, here are three sites that are of great importance and surrounded by the few remaining protected natural zones of Attica. We highly recommend going to the little-visited Vravron (or Vravrona) archaeological site. The site was sacred to the goddess, Demeter, and is in pristine condition with a small museum connected to the site. It's not difficult to combine it with the site of Rhamnous with a bit of a drive. Or choose to take a tour to nearby Pendeli Mountain and delve into a cave once dedicated to the nature god, Pan. The 11th Kaisariani Monastery is a collection of flower-speckled ruins, living quarters of monks and priests, worship space and a wide network of trails circuiting Hymettos mountain.

The Hellenic Equestrian Foundation can link experienced horse riders with horses and direct them to nearby trails in the mountains.

For those with kids, the Attica Zoo is very nearby the airport. Once just a collection of rare birds, this zoo has blossomed into a fully loaded animal park including a new dolphinareum. Or for something more active, the Attiki Odos, the national highway, gets you quickly to the seaside and a large number of beaches. The Yabanki Resort is one that offers several water sports as well clean shower rooms so you won't bring sand into the airplane after.

The modern Olympic complex built for the 2004 games is in nearby Maroussi. See the exceptional dome built for the main hall designed by Spanish architect, Calatrava then go into the old press headquarters now serving as "The Golden Hall," a mall that meets the highest of standards.

Several wineries are in the Spata region around the airport and are open to visitors. Though they don't operate quite like the wineries of Italy or Northern California with regard to sampling, calling ahead could open the door for an interesting tour of the facilities and a chance to learn more about Greek wine. One that we like for its high quality is Megapanos.
