Athens was once the home of heroes and adventurers; the modern city has certainly become more civilized but adventure, discovery, and the making of stories is still close at hand. Here are our ten best candidates for adventurous things to do in Athens; we're sure you'll be retelling the tales for years to come.
Great adventures require a great voyage. An hour long journey south toward Corinth is perfect for building anticipation for doing the ultimate stunt: jumping off a bridge. Not just any bridge, either! This bridge crosses over a canal two thousand years in the making. Do it with the original jumpers- Zulu Bungee Jumping. Or venture North into Pendeli Mountain to explore the former hideout of a thief. The Aharnes Alpine Club is an experienced group of climbers who can take you into Parnitha Mountain where there is reportedly a haunted cave dedicated to the nature god, Pan.
Three of our favorite tour groups that will make your dream adventure reality: Trekking Hellas is a travel group specialized in off the beaten path adventures throughout the entire region of Attica including city adventures involving cooking. If trekking isn't your thing, why not fly? Book a helicopter tour with Hop In tours to fly slowly over the monuments for optimal picture taking. Athens By Bike gives a more down to earth adventure through the hurly-burly streets of Athens on two wheels.
Attica has a great variety of beaches, but the wild coast toward Sounio is rife with picturesque pull-off points to clamber down to the shore and be one with the sea. On the other side of the spectrum is Yabanaki Beach which we consider a perfectly organized day at the sea where you can windsurf and water ski.
Speaking of organized, we wanted to include visually spectacular Koutouki Cave enhanced with lighting and guided tours, but it should be noted that the visiting hours are short and true spelunkers might find it tame, making it the perfect place to bring your little adventurers-in-training.
