NileGuide Expert tip:

The exterior of the stadium is open throughout the year, but entering can open during Panathinaikos games and performances.

Description:

This stadium was originally completed in 1982 for the European Championship in Athletics. When the 2004 Olympic games were awarded to Athens, it was spiffied up and given a brand new roof with a span of over 300 meters, supported by two giant arcs designed by the Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava. The opening and closing ceremonies took place here in August of 2004. After the sheen of the 2004 Olympic games wore off, the Modern Olympic stadium was designated the new home for the Panathinaikos football club of Athens (the green and whites) who's fans routine fill all 72,000 seats, especially during games with arch-rivals, Olympiakos club of Piraeus (the red and whites.)

The venue is also used for big-deal concerts like Beyonce Knowles and U2.
