NileGuide Expert tip:

After browsing the selection at Poupee, head for refreshment and a little more shopping at the nearby Belle Epoque tearoom for a most feminine afternoon.

Description:

Christina Mathea is the creator of Poupee, a delightful shop as evidenced by its magical window where unusual dresses and dolls are suspended with ribbons, silk flowers and Christmas lights. Passerbys will notice a pull cord with a posted instruction: gently pulling the cord raises and lowers the attached dress from inside the shop window.

You get the impression that you've wandered into Christina's imagined world, where dresses look like modern takes on vintage illustrations of nursery rhymes and towering wardrobes could double as portals to enchanted gardens. The cash registrar is conveniently next to a piano for the fairies who come to serenade the doll maker by night, we suppose, for even when the shop isn't open you can see one of the store's workers hunched over the cotton form of a doll with a needle and thread. The dolls and beautifully tailored clothing created for them are the reason for the store's namesake and are sold at twenty euros with an outfit. Christina offers the doll's dress patterns for free.

The shop is in a quiet backstreet of Plaka, found easily by following Iperidou Street from Navarchou Nikodimou, a major street of Plaka that connects to the avenue Filellinon.
