Best place for a weekend picnic or afternoon spent with a pet
Description:
The most expansive and popular of Atlanta's city parks was originally laid out for the Cotton States and International Exposition of 1895, and it now attracts more than 2 million visitors annually. Dog owners, sun seekers and sports enthusiasts flock to the park to enjoy the fair weather, largely unaware that this was the spot of the Battle of Peachtree Creek during the Civil War. The 189-acre facility is home to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and scenic Lake Clara Meer, and plays host to many of Atlanta's favorite concerts and festivals.

There's always a crowd of people milling about the corner of Virginia and Highland on weekend mornings; they're waiting for brunch at Murphy's, a handsome white-and-green house that accepts call-aheads, but not reservations. The charming dining area has been kept roomy, creating a comfortable environment but also resulting in slightly longer waits. Chicken, lamb and vegetable dinner specialties are well prepared, as is "the Big Murphy," an enormous baked potato that's a meal in itself. Murphy's wine tasting is a highlight.
