The Best of NileGuide
- There are plenty of options for the budget traveller in Auckland and the good news is that you can sleep cheap and still be central. First you need to decide whether you want to actually get some sleep or be a part of the backpacker party scene. This may sound trivial, but many budget travellers who land in Auckland on a Round-the-World ticket are just pleased to be able to speak English and eat some familiar food. What really comes along side of this is often beer and parties. If this is what you are looking for, Auckland's budget hostels, known here as 'Backpackers' will make you happy. One that is well-known is Base, which used to be called ACB/ Auckland Central Backpackers and you may still hear it referred to by that name. If you still want budget accommodation but sans party atmosphere, don't worry. Most backpackers have a mix of clientele. Just pop in and have a look or, if you want to book ahead check out their website. If they have a bar, chances are high that there will be more of a party atmosphere. Also, suburban backpackers tend to have more 'long-termers', usually travellers working in New Zealand on a one-year working holiday visa. These places tend to be more chilled out as many of the guests have to get up for work in the morning. Some places, such as Kiwi International, also have hotel-like rooms. Failing that, you can always check the list for those hotels with prices listed and choose that way.
