  • Although it is convenient to stay in the CBD, plenty of people would rather sleep just a little bit further out. Enter the suburban hotels. Although Auckland is a big city land-wise, many of the attractions are within a compact area. This means that you can easily stay in the suburbs and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere without too much trouble getting in to see the sights. The neighbourhoods themselves also have their own character. The North Shore: Devonport is a lovely little seaside area with secon=hand bookshops and cafes alongside the beach and children's playground. Takapuna also has great beaches as well as good nightlife. Remuera: an upmarket suburb with posh shops and, in some areas, sweeping views of teh city at a distance. Newmarket: Shopping central! Mt. Eden: A lovely little village-like area with great cafes and restaurants all under the looming Mt. Eden volcano (you can walk up!) If you'd prefer to be even further out, try the Kohimarama Retreat at the beach or go way out west to the Lone Kauri Lodge. The peace and quiet you get by sleeping in the native bush is life-restoring. There are a variety of options here from a holiday park on the beach to mid-range chain hotels. So, there should be something in your budget wherever you'd prefer to stay.
