The Best of NileGuide
- If you climb up a volcano or go to the top of the Sky Tower you will notice straight away that Auckland is a very green city.We love our green areas and you will see every bench or patch of grass covered in business people come lunchtime in the CBD. But it's not just for lunch breaks. There are many good spots where you can have a picnic, play a spot of rugby, or just smell the flowers. Right in the city centre you'll find lots of choices tucked in behind most main streets. For more space, try Albert or Victoria Park. Or you could look high and head up a volcanic cone. The top picks would be Mount Eden and One Tree Hill in Cornwall Park. While you'll have to bring your own sammies (sandwiches) to Mt. Eden, Cornwall park has a cafe and a takeaway coffee and icecream kiosk. The ice cream is exceptional, by the way. Also in the city suburbs are the Auckland Domain, which surrounds the War Memorial Museum and Wintergardens and hosts outdoor concerts in the summer, and the Parnell Rose Gardens. Some fo the city beaches have grassy areas that are perfect for picnics or throwing the frisbee and, if you are prepared for a wee drive north, you can find the more expansive Tawharanui and Wenderholm Regional Parks.
