There are plenty of cool things to do for families who are visting Auckland with the kiddies in tow. We have wonderful beaches with unique features like rock pools, caves and black sand. And the best thing is that there is often ice cream available nearby. Try the Hokey Pokey flavour. It's a local favourite that is unique to New Zealand.
And do check out the parks. Cornwall Park has sheep runnning around in it, which is very New Zealand, and you can also climb the volcanic cone for a great view and opportunity to teach the next generation all about plate tectonics from this very lively landscape.
You can take a fun ferry ride out to Rangitoto to climb around on the volcano or to Devonport for some fun on the beach playground with great Kiwi cafes nearby for Mum and Dad to get their flat white (NZ speak for cafe au lait). There are also interactive museums and a zoo. Be sure to find the kiwi house at the zoo where day has been changed to night just so you can view kiwi birds while they are active.
Whatever you do, if you are going to be out in the sun, be sure and slather your kids in sunscreen and a hat. The burn time can be fewer than 10 minutes down here. They can copy little Kiwis who wear "rash suits" which are like T-shirts for swimming in that provide extra cover. Your kids will blend right in.
As far as safety is concerned in general with kids, New Zealand is not a place parents have to worry too much about. Yes, we have our natural dangers such as the sun and dangerous rip tides in the sea on some beaches, but other child-related crimes are not very common and many Kiwis come home after long stints living abroad just to raise their families in this environment. So enjoy our family friendly destination.
