Description:

• Skiing on a volcano is one of the highlights of the winter season for visitors to New Zealand. At Mt. Ruapehu, you can choose to go to either of two areas, Whakapapa (fah-kah-pah'-pah) or Turoa (too'-row-ah). Both usually open around the end of June/ beginning of July depending on snow, of course. All abilities are catered for including heaps of lesson opportunities for beginners. Whakapapa hosts the biggest of the beginner areas, but both have plenty to keep the advanced skier occupied including backcountry runs. Turoa boasts Australasia's longest vertical descent.
  
  You can rent all the gear you'll need right on site, or at many outlets in the surrounding areas, including Taupo on the other side of the lake.
