Tiritiri Matangi Island

  • User Review:

    • Tiritiri Matangi Island is just over an hour from AUckland by ferry. This island is an amazing Auckland sancturary to watch native New Zealand birds. The famous Tui is everyhwere and sit down with a picnic and enjoy their singing. There is an opportunity to stay overnight, make sure you book your bunk with the Department of Conservation and take the opportunity to do some kiwi spotting at night. The little spotted kiwi is endangered and there are not many opportunities in New Zealand to see the kiwi in the wild. Tiritir Matangi is a predator free island so the kiwi can florish. Also have fun with Greg the flight Takahe. This is also a flightless native New Zealand bird. Full of character and with a bit of luck he will welcome you from the ferry. There are several beaches to relax on and plenty of walking to be done. Make sure you take a picnic as there are no shops on the island.
