Description:

  • The Kennebec River Rail Trail offers a superb opportunity to view Augusta's scenic vista along the Kennebec River, the main waterway through Maine's capitol city. Managed by Friends of Kennebec River Rail Trail, this path runs parallel to the Augusta-Portland railroad tracks which, though unused, still remain intact. The 6.5 mile route, which travels through the communities of Augusta, Hallowell, Farmingdale and Gardiner, is comprised of compacted gravel for a smooth, even surface. Visitors will enjoy up close and personal viewing of the waterfront, woodlands, and also landmarks such as the Maine State House and the Maine State Museum. The trail is ideal for cyclists, hikers, casual walkers and, in the winter, for cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Motorized vehicles are prohibited from using this path but parking is available in a lot across from Old Fort Western (on the opposite shore) as well as near the Maine State Museum.
