- One of UNESCO's world heritage sites, the city of Ayutthaya is well known among historians for its ancient ruins and poignant architecture. Referred to as the Venice of the East, the city was built by the King U-Thong who declared it the capital of his kingdom, Siam. Most of the city was destroyed by the Burmese army during their rampage around the country which resulted in the fall of the empire. The city's historical park, ancient temples and other ruins are a must-see for all visitors touring the area.
