Run by a German-Japanese couple, this hotel is locally known as "Peter's Hotel" for its owner. Nestled into the foot of the Black Mountain about a kilometer (bf1/2 mile) from the middle of town, the main building incorporates a large hot-spring-fed soaking pool, with the rooms spread out in low, bungalow-style buildings around the gardens. The decor around the hotel is more evocative of a European spa (indicative perhaps of their market) than the Bedouin culture of the desert, and the wooden-floored rooms are spotlessly clean and fairly spacious. The restaurant has its own building with a thatched roof. Unless you're looking for something a lot more toward the budget end of the scale, the IHC offers good value for money and is a great place to base yourself for desert adventures.
Another good reason to stay at the IHC is that they can offer a one-stop shop for almost any conceivable safari need through their White Desert Tours company. Pickup and transfer to Bahareya from Cairo is available for either LE750 ($136/£69; no air-conditioning) or LE950 ($173/£88; with air-conditioning).
Staff speak excellent English.
