Galungan Holy Day

Description:

  • One of the most important aspects of the Balinese religion is how its followers honor and revere their ancestors who are actually deified souls and worshipped so. Once every 210 days, these ancestors descend into the family temples. Fantastically decorated bamboo poles (penjor) create a living canopy throughout the entire island. This holiday celebrates the victory of good over that which destroys good. To mark the festival, many barongs dance in the streets. In addition, numerous temple festivals take place. The dates of this festival vary every year.
