Pura Beji

Description:

  • This most unusual temple lies halfway between Singaarja and Kubutambahan, in the tiny village of Sangsit. Built out of red brick and completely covered in carvings, the subak or rice-irrigation society temple dates back to the 15th century. It is probably the most baroque-looking temple on the island. The shrines seem to burst with carved turrets. Old frangipani trees fill the courtyards inside, giving the entire place a feeling of stillness. At the gate, you will be asked for a small donation fee. Admission: By donation.
