Pura Payogan Agung

Description:

  • Etymologically speaking, Pura Payogan Agung means "large place for yoga and meditation." Many centuries ago, Prince Dewa Agung Dalem Karna was said to have fallen into a deep trance over several days while meditating. Regaining consciousness he related a vision he had of beautiful dancing angels wearing colorful masks. Many believe that it was this vision that led to the creation of the Balinese legong dance as we see it today. Housed within the premises are numerous magical masks, as well as a semara pagulingan gamelan set, apparently the oldest of its type on the island. Admission: By donation.
