Whether you're a family of 10, a newly-married couple, or a lone traveler, there are plenty of things to do in Banff. As it is surrounded by the majestic Canadian Rockies, blanketed by vast forests and alpine meadows, and crisscrossed with lakes and rivers, Banff National Park is a wonderful place for those who love the outdoors. If you're hoping to hit the trails for a strenuous climb or leisurely walk, make sure to pick up a free Banff/Lake Louise Drives and Walks guide. With this, you'll be able to navigate the park's 80+ maintained trails and choose from some of its most popular hikes. Make sure to ask local parks rangers about bears, however. While bear attacks are uncommon, late summer is prime berry picking season, and bears might be wandering around!
There are great opportunities for cyclists in Banff. One spectacular - but challenging - ride is the breathtaking 178-miles between Banff and Jasper along the Icefield Parkway. If you come to Banff sans bicycle, you can rent one at many of the outfitting stores in Banff and the Lake Louise area. Other outdoor adventures include fishing, rafting and canoeing, golfing, and horseback riding. Visitors can experience Rocky Mountain adventures of all sorts with the Canadian Rockies Adventure Centre.
Although seasonal, there is great skiing for all levels in Banff. Banff's three main ski areas are Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village, and Lake Louise. Check out skibig3.com, a single website devoted to all three areas, to learn more.
If you're not in the mood for sports, Banff also has great shopping, museums, and other attractions. Take a ride on the Banff Gondola or a boat tour of the beautiful Lake Minnewanka. If you're into museums, check out the Banff Park, Buffalo Nations Luxton, and Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies museums. Or spend the day relaxing in a world-class spa, like the one at the Banff Springs Hotel.
