Off Beaten Path Attractions in Bangkok

So you've seen the Reclining Buddha, had some Pad Thai with the other travelers down on Khao San Road, and visited the Grand Palace and National Museum. Now dig a bit deeper into the rich layers of Bangkok and find your way into some of the city's overlooked and under-appreciated places. Don't just hit the Chatuchak Market. Get across the road to Or Tor Kor Market as well.

You've also got your temples less traveled such as Wat Yannawa with its concrete boat and a small museum of Buddha relics, or Wat Traimit Wittayaram and its 5-ton gold Buddha and a Yaowarat Chinatown Heritage Center. Wat Mahabutr lies on a canal and is home to a shrine to a local ghost (plus a mummified baby).

Lesser known museums include the fantastic Museum of Buddhist Art, which takes a bit of prior planning, as well as the creepy Siriraj Medical Museum/Forensics Museum with its human samples in jars, a preserved serial killer and a modern exhibit of the role of forensics in the Asian Tsunami of 2004. The Golden Teak Museum is a pleasant stop to see a very large preserved teak building along the Chao Phraya River. Though right in the center of other attractions, the King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) Museum illuminates Thailand's transition from absolute to constitutional monarchy.

If you are looking for something more active, head up the river in a longtail boat to Koh Kret for a day of exploring or hop on a bike tour and sneak through the back alleys and walkways around town.
