Lak Muang (Bangkok's City Pillar Shrine)

Description:

  • Though white on the exterior, the center of this shrine is actually a wooden column placed here upon the founding of Bangkok as the new capital (after Thonburi across the Chao Phraya River). King Rama I inaugurated this shrine to the city on April 21, 1782. Locals come daily to make offerings and prayers. You can also see Thai dances here (Lakhon) as the faithful come and pay for them to be offered to the spirit of Bangkok (much as the practice at Erawan Shrine). This is a short walk from the Grand Palace.
