Hello, I have more or less confirmed a trip to Bangkok in the first week of May. However, newspapers report a bit of political unrest, with riots/protests affecting some parts of the city.

Friends have expressed some concern that shops could be closed, among other fears, like being caught in the conflict.

Do I have cause for concern? Any advice on how to react if an emergency does occur? Do share. Thank you

Hello the unrest has died down and now back to bussiness as usual in Bangkok.
If you worry about tensions there, come south to Phuket etc, we will give you the holiday of a lifetime. See you here.

Things are quiet now, shops and restaurants will be business as usual when you get here, and any of the trouble makers have nothing against foreigners. enjoy your holiday.

A friend of mine is coming to Bangkok this Thursday. First she had decided to canceled the trip but since the government could take care of the unrest and everything seems fine now so she changed her mind. Now everything got back to normal. I just went to Kao San last night to join to water fight. Lots of tourists were there. I think nothing serious would happen after this (hopefully). To react to anything emergency, I suggest you should make yourself available to be connected anywhere you go (in case something happens so a hotel or a local friend you know can call you). If I have any other important thing, I'll add later.

I live in Bangkok. If you didn't go looking to join the protests you would hardly know they were happening. shops aren't closed. It's life as usual except people are watching the news more than usual. Besides things have pretty much quieted down now. Come to Bangkok. It's a great city and safe. It's quite amazing to be here and see how much things are being blown out of proportion on international news. There have been very few injuries. It wasn't so so horrible.

Absolutely no cause of concern... this is part of the Thai culture... they have been doing this for years... so dont worry... come and enjoy just stay a way from red and yellow...

The political protests have stopped for the current time. They were centered around the Dindaeng and government building areas of BKK. Shops are open and you can safely enjoy Thailand.

Media always blows political unrest in Thailand way out of proportion,which in turn has a knock on effect in the tourism industry,hence you asking this question.
I however have never once seen any protester cause any problem to anyone from western or different parts of the world,so in m my opinion you wont even see anything to do with political unrest especially in the touristy parts in Bangkok i.e where most westerners(farang)stay in guesthouses or hotels,Sukumvit or kaew san road.........Definately come to thailand you will be fine,and have a great time

Its all quiet again. by the time you arrive it might have started up again and died down 3 more times. Who knows. even if things do get ugly, you will not be anywhere near it. just enjoy the beautiful city and wonderful people.

In newspapers it sound always more scary than it is.
Bangkok is about 1600 KM2. If you don't go the area where protesters are, it's just Bangkok as every other day of the year.
