PratuNam is a rather central place for all sorts of shopping. Pantip Plaza (IT), Platinum (attire), Pratunam street market, Central World (General) are all within walking distance. Even MaBoonKrong (MBK) is not far. However keep in mind, early Jan is peak season. For selecting your specific hotel go to www.wotif.com/bangkokhotels.

The area around Chao San Rd you can find cheap rooms and you have easy access to other parts of Bangkok and the rest of Thailand. Don't go in Chao San Rd but take the roads around it.

Best advise within your budget, stay at Kaosarn road in one of the many guesthouses. From there, taxi-meters will bring you to every corner of Bangkok or shopping malls.

have fun.
