However, one of Bangor's best kept secrets is its growing and vibrant arts community. Now, visitors to Bangor can get a taste of the creative energy brewing in this quaint city by participating in the seasonal Downtown Bangor Artwalk. Hosted by the Downtown Bangor Arts Collaborative, a loose consortium of Bangor artists living in and near the city, Artwalk takes place on select Friday evenings from March to November and features free tours of open studios throughout downtown Bangor. Sauntering along Bangor's historic thoroughfares, it is possible to view painting, sculpture, photography, fiber and fabric arts being produced by some of Maine's finest artists. It is even possible to enjoy a sampling of dance and music performances staged within peforming space as well as on the street. Many visitors make a night of it, first enjoying a delicious meal at one of Bangor's premier downtown eateries and then visiting the studios that participate in the tour.
