Franklin Delano Roosevelt made an annual trek to the prosperous summer colony at Campobello Island, just across a bridge from Lubec (it's actually in Canada). You can learn much about Roosevelt and his early life at the visitor center of this park, and take a self-guided tour of the elaborate mansion. But be sure to save some time to explore the parklands, which offer scenic coastline and plenty of walking trails. The visitor center closes in late October, but the grounds remain open year-round. Maps and walk suggestions are available at the visitor center. It's easily worth spending a half-day here. (Because this is in Canada, be sure to bring the proper government-issued documentation.)
