NileGuide Expert tip:

Cool breezes off of the Salmon Falls River make for refreshing summer strolls in Vaughan Woods State Park. Winter turns the park into a premier cross country skiing and snowshoeing experience.

Description:

Vaughan Woods State Park is prized as a local getaway by residents of South Berwick, a small inland community in the Maine Beaches region. This 250-acre tract of land offers the feeling of deep woodlands solitude even though it is located just off busy Route 236. The park is comprised of thick stands of old growth pine and hemlock trees located on gentle, slightly hilly terrain. Three miles of clearly defined trails course through the park with several offering dramatic, scenic views from a rise overlooking the nearby Salmon Falls River. While most of the park is easily accessible to casual walkers, some trail portions can be steep near the river. The park is a favorite among off-road bikers and hikers. During the winter months, it is a prime spot for cross country skiers and snowshoers. A special feature of the park is the Hamilton House, a striking Georgian-style colonial mansion that belonged to an original owner of the property. During the summer months, there are frequent tours of the mansion. An adjacent guest house and garden is also the site of art shows as well as weekend summer concerts performed by top notch local musicians. For those seeking a touch of serenity amidst the busy Maine beach scene, Vaughan Woods State Park is a sure bet.
