  • Spanish and in particular Catalan traditional food can be greasy or gourmet, but for the most part it's always pretty tasty. Whether you're eating tapas, entrees or main courses, Barcelona's local food usually comes with Pan con Tomate and a selection of meat or fish dishes accompanied with patatas fritas (fries) and always finished off with the traditional Crema Catalana for dessert.

There are plenty of traditional Catalan restaurants around Barcelona, the trick is knowing where to find the most authentic and local ones, in order to truly get the most out your experience. North of Barcelona on the coast, our number three pick is an elegant, excellent choice for classic Barcelona food. Casa Roura, considered one of Lluis Domenech i Montaner's masterpieces, provides for a warm ambiance, with delicious paella, fish, meats and salads. It's a nice trip outside of Barcelona, you can go for lunch and come back to the city for dinner.

If you're looking for something a little less upscale and in the heart of the city, our number four pick is ideal. Cal Pep is a small, hole in the wall restaurant in the Old City. With only a few tables, this place is always packed as the food is reasonably priced. They also have an extensive wine list to accompany the local tapas.

Looking for one of Barcelona's oldest and most traditional restaurants? Then look no further than our number ten pick. Can Culleretes, opened in 1780, has been serving 100% homemade Catalan food ever since. Regulars frequent the restaurant on a daily basis, so if you're looking for the ultimate local vibe, this is the place to go.
