The beauty of Barcelona is that every neighborhood has a different story. When comparing the Eixample barrio in Barcelona, to Gothic Quarter and other areas of the old city, it's like different worlds. Eixample, literally meaning, 'expansion' is Barcelona's 'newer' area, as it was built mostly between 1850-1930. It houses some of Gaudi's most incredible works, as well as those of other renowned architects including Lluis Domenech and Josep Puig, amongst others.
Our number one pick for the latest thing to do in the Eixample neighborhood, is Casa Batllo. Day or night if you walk by this incredible structure, you'll see people staring up in awe. It's actually pretty amazing to see at night, as the building lights up, taking on a whole new persona than during the day. Even if you don't want to pay the entrance fee, it's worth checking out, even from the street.
Slightly out of the eixample neighborhood, yet definitely one of Barcelona's 'must sees' is Gaudi's famous, Sagrada Familia Church. Still under construction, this visage is one of the many things you HAVE to see in Barcelona. Set to be completed in 2026, this building spans a few blocks and is Gaudi's greatest triumph.
Our number nine pick, is a tour company, however their Modernist Fantasy Tour is not to be missed. This specialized, private tour company, run by an American who's lived in Barcelona for more than ten years, offers an in depth, very local and informative view into Gaudi's architecture and Modernism in general. This is probably the best way to get not only a feel for the buildings themselves but an overall city vibe.
