Whether you're an architect buff or only en route to Barcelona to enjoy the tapas, sangria and after parties, you can't walk away from the city without checking out at least a few of its incredibly renowned architectural designs. From Gaudi, to Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch, amongst others, Barcelona is known for its avant garde, modernist masterpieces.
Our number one pick is hands down, the Sagrada Familia. Under construction since 1882, this magnificent Gaudi Church was the staging ground for the Pope's recent visit and is set to be completed in 2026. There's no need to even go inside (if you don't feel like it) as you can take in this breathtaking visage from the street and circle the front and back which takes up a few blocks.
Heading downtown, into the old city, the Palau de La Musica, is another architectural gem. Built between 1905 and 1908 by the architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, this concert hall hosts orchestras, symphonies and concerts. Whether you're seeing a show or just passing by, definitely go inside this building, it's gorgeous.
Slightly out of town and more off the beaten path, our number nine pick is for those more architecturally inclined. Colonia Guell, home to Gaudi's Crypt,is a great day trip to see not only some of Gaudi's architecture, but the entire colony and village as well.
