Description:
There may not be a pool, gym, or minibar in sight, but that hasn't stopped the runaway success of this pioneer boutique hostelry. That's due to its location (El Born) and the fact that it's a few notches up the quality-and-comfort scale from competitors such as the Orleans. It's set in a 19th-century mansion and the spacious rooms have been relieved of their original adornments and given a soothing, sophisticated makeover that would not be out of place in a hotel four times as expensive. Also unusual is the fact that the edifice is shared with Senyor Parellada, a classic Barcelonese restaurant that now partly acts as the hotel's own. A buffet breakfast is served on its mezzanine and guests can run up a tab for lunch/evening meals as well. The downside of all this is that the sound of human revelry from the pedestrian street below reaches a crescendo during the summer months, although this can often be avoided by asking for a room at the back. Of course, those who want to be in the thick of it will love having the city's coolest shops and bars right on their doorstep and will possibly be partaking in the nocturnal street activity themselves. Most of the showers are spacious and walk-in; if you really want a bathtub, stipulate at time of booking.
