You'll see how Barcelona is a children friendly city. In terms of activities to do it all depends on how old are your children, but places like the Zoo or the Aquarium are adapted to any age, there is not a lot of queuing for the zoo usually but you may find a bit more for the Aquarium (it is the world's largest Aquarium dedicated to the mediterranean see, the most impressive part of it is the "sharks tunnel") I would advice another place if your children are over 5 years old which is the CosmoCaixa, a place for scientific learning aimed to the whole family with experiments and observation of nature and physics adapted to the kids.
Don't forget they will cetainly enjoy a lot the fantastic and colorful world of Antoni Gaudi's architecture!! (Park Güell, Casa Batlló etc...) and the port and beaches!
Places for good local food in the Poble Sec: I highly advice a local tapas bar called "Quimet&Quimet" in the street C/Poeta Cabanyes, 25. Several restaurants in the C/Blai like "La Bodegueta" (C/Blai,47). Two other restaurants are also famous amongst the local people: "Can Margarit" C/ de la Concòrdia, 21 and "Casa Leopoldo" in C/Sant Rafael, 24 (a bit more expansive though) The last one I advice is called El Basílico (Av/Parallel, 142)
Well, I hope these advice may help you, for more international food (if your kids are not very interested in trying local mediterranean food) you will find plenty of other restaurants and fastfoods in the Av/Parallel.
Hope you'll enjoy your stay here and if you feel you need a local guide for half a day or more with your family here, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Another great park, although not too close to Poble Sec is Ciutadella Park, near the Born and Arc de Triomf area. It's great for kids, especially on Sunday's and there's a little pond with ducks as well.
