Hi, I'm glad you've chosen Barcelona for your holiday destination. You will find hundreds of hotels, of any type, price, location (best central situation is in the Barri Gotic) you will find good advice and pictures in www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com This web will also provide you all details needed for restaurant, shopping, night clubs etc...
The city has a lot to offer, its old Gothic Quarter is charming, you can see parts of the roman walls next to the cathedral, the medieval royal palace and chapel, dark and narrow streets in the old Jewish district etc... but Barcelona is also known for the Modernist architecture, in the 19th century district called Eixample. That is for instance the very colourful works of Antoni Gaudi (a world of magics and fantasy).
This city is full of history but it also is a symbol of modernity. Since the 1992 Olympic Games where celebrated here, many world famous architects and artists are coming, working in such an opened minded city for new projects using the best technologies and the most surprising concepts.
I'm an official guide here and I offer walking tours in town. I also have a van and offer tours with the van to see more aspects of the city, across different districts. If you want to know more about my activity, please don't hesitate to ask me through Localyte.
Hope to hear from you soon, bye

I'm an official tourguide and I offer all kind of private tours in Barcelona and its surroundings, but I'm also delighted to give some advice to any visitor!
The best areas to get an hotel would be either in the Old Town or near the Passeig de Gràcia avenue, in the Eixample district. In my website I've got a listing of my favorite ones, sorted out by zone and with a short description about why I like them. http://foreverbarcelona.com/My_reccomendations.htm
And just below you'll find also a selection of my favorite restaurants.
For shopping areas, my list is here: http://foreverbarcelona.com/Time_organizer.htm#_Shopping
As for places to visit, I'd structure it in two main focusses:
1. The Old Town (including La Rambla with the Boqueria Food Market, the Gothic Quarter with the Cathedral and the many narrow alleys, charming squares and medieval churches and palaces, and the Born section with the church of Santa Maria del Mar and the Picasso Museum.
2. The works of the architect Antoni Gaudí such as his appartment buildings Casa Batlló and Casa Milà / Pedrera, the unfinished Sagrada Familia church and the Park Güell.
Then if you still have time, explore the Hill of Montjuic (1929 World Fair, 1992 Olympics) and the waterfront (Port Vell, Barceloneta neighbourhood and Olympic Village).
For places out of the tourist tracks in town, try the medieval streets below the City Council (Ample, Avinyó, Lledó, Regomir...) and the squares of the Gracia district (Rius i Taulet, Sol, Virreina, Rovira i Trias...). Also the Park of the Labyrinth in Horta.
Regarding nearby towns, I agree with Girona as the best choice if you like old architecture. But again, check out my website to get more ideas and see pictures of all the other options (many!): http://foreverbarcelona.com/Out_of_Town_Trips.htm
Finally, I'm sure that in my blog, that I keep constantly updated on what's new in town and my best latest tours you'll find plenty of good ideas for your the rest of your time with us! http://foreverbarcelona.blogspot.com/
I hope all this information was helpful! I wish you the best for your trip!
