is there a train from Montserrat to Barcelona? If so, would this be better than renting a car?

Yes, there are trains. Check Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya at www.fgc.es.
Stop at Montserrat-Aeri and take the cablecar (scary!) Or stop at Monistrol de Montserrat ant take the rack train. There are combined tickets available.
Renting a car would be way more expensive, and you'll have to either pay for the parking and probably have to park even 20-30min walk from the Monastery, or pay for the cabecar/racktrain anyway.
