The Bed and Breakfast concept isn't huge in China, and you'd be hard pressed to find a ma and pa operation run to western standards. The small hotels that offer breakfasts are usually business hotels that cater to short-term workers and career men, and which can sometimes be unsacory locations for couples or families. Instead, the B&B atmosphere can best be found in the more high-end hostels. While most retired couples wouldn't usually consider a hostel, in China they are usually quite nice, clean and run by friendly staff. They offer travel advice and often serve breakfast for a small fee.
Daniel's B&B is a rare exception to the usual lack of B&Bs in China. Here you'll find exactly what you've come to expect from a bed and breakfast. Simple accommodations run by content businesmen, this B&B is a pleasant place to stay while enjoying Beijing.
For nice hutongs appropriate for all ages (without a loud party crowd or backpacker's atmosphere) try the Beijing Hutong Inn, Templeside Deluxe or the extremely popular Double Happiness Courtyard Hotel. All options offer a lasting impression of China's hutongs (traditional courtyard homes) and the Double Happiness is one of the nicest courtyard homes converted into a hotel in Beijing.
Breakfast is possible at the Friendship Hotel, Zhongtang Hotel and Tangyue Hotels, but these are Chinese hotels run by locals that may miss the point of the B&B atmosphere. You wont find a friendly couple eager to help you with your travels and exploration, but you will find low costs and a local experience.
Finally, the remaining hutong hotels are affordable, offer decent accommodation, breakfast and travel assistance as well as insight into the hutong community and a cultural connection you won't find at the larger, brand name hotels nor at the cheaper Chinese locally-run hotels.
