Beijing is an outdoor city! With so many monuments and attractions out in the open, you'll feel connected with the wild without leaving the city. From climbing on the Great Wall to hours of walking through the Forbidden City, you'll find birds overhead and fresh air swirling around you. Go on your own or book a tour. For the turly courageous, check with the Beijing Hikers Group to experience the wall or other outdoor walks with walking experts.
Start off your trip with a visit to the Great Wall. Keep in mind that this is no easy climb! Although many attempt it, not everyone can finish the 2 - 3k loop (depending on where you start). The wall was designed to keep people out and is quite a bit of exercise!
Tiananmen Square, on the other hand, seems also to be designed to keep people out. Fun to see for the historical merit, the square has become harder to reach. You now have to access it only where the white security tents are assembled.
Near Tiananmen lies the Forbidden City. This entire city is essentially one complex but with most of the square footage outdoors. Make sure you go on a nice day so your pictures will be clear and you'll be able to appreciate the beautiful walls and gardens.
The Ban Bi Dian Forest Park is an excellent outdoor activity that will leave you eager for more nature (something in short supply in China's largest city!)
Qianmen Market Street and Guijie offer shopping, dining and loads of photo opportunities. You'll find your favorite part of China was simply walking around looking at all the differences and soaking in the outdoor culture.
The Beijing Zoo and Chaoyang Park are great little oasis of greenery and serenity in central Beijing. Either offer much needed city reprieve.
