Beijing is an animal friendly city-- at least in terms of exotic animals that dwell behind bars! From the zoo to amazing aquariums and even a historical exhibit of stuffed animals, Beijing has found a way to take nature and wildlife and make it touchable and ever beautiful.
The Beijing Zoo, once a controversial animal housing facility, is now a lively, beautiful green park with delightful exhibits on animals and some information on the species as well. Still not up to western standards in terms of info or habitats, the zoo has come a long way in a mere five years. I expect the zoo to be continually improving into the future. Be aware, however, that the large cat exhibit has caused many westerners to be quite disturbed, so avoid that or else prepare yourself!
The aquarium in Beijing is said to be one of the biggest and best in Asia. With a wealth of sea life, including some creatures you can pet and prod for a few extra RMB, you'll find it an enlightening place to enjoy some clear blue water and sounds of sea. You do have to pay extra to enter the aquarium (part of the zoo) but it is worth the money and you'll be amazed at the exhibits.
Finally, when you have exhausted the aquariums and zoos in Beijing, head to the local parks where you can do some fishing, or else relax as you watch people walk their dogs and yes, sometimes their cats and ferrets.
