- Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, on the brightest full moon of the year, Mid-Autumn Festival celebrates the autumn harvest. Traditional activities on this day (and night) are to gaze at the moon with friends, let off fireworks (although they are prohibited in most urban areas), and eat moon cakes. Moon cakes are said to date from the Mongol rule of China, when the Chinese would hide secret message in them to plot against their oppressors. Whatever the truth in this, they are very tasty.
