- The Yingdong Natatorium, initially constructed decades earlier, was substantially redesigned and improved upon for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics as a venue for water polo and the swimming portion of the modern pentathlon. Among the improvements engineers made, were an automated skylight, and a hi-tech sound-proofing system that eliminates the confusing two-second audio delay that annoyed athletes and broadcasters alike. The center covers an area of 44,635 square meters (480,500 square feet) and can seat almost 5000 fans.
